Bu yazımızda kendi başına kitap okuyabilecek yaşta olan çocuklarımız için nasıl ve hangi kitapları seçmemiz gerektiğine değineceğiz. Kendi başına kitap okuyabilen çocuklarımıza bağımsız okuyucular diyoruz. Bağımsız okuyucular için kitap alırken, eğlenceli, öğretici ve zorlayıcı olmaları arasında bir denge kurmalıyız. Temel okuma becerilerini geliştiren yaşlarına, okuma seviyelerine ve ilgi alanlarına uygun çekici kitapları seçmeliyiz.
Öncelikle bazı uyarılar:
Bağımsız okuma seviyesindeki çocuklarımız okurken kendilerini başarılı hissetmelidirler. Bağımsız olarak okurken, her kelimeye sözlükten bakmalarını beklersek okuma istekleri kalmaz. Çocuklar akıcı bir şekilde okuyabilecekleri kitapları okuyarak okumayı öğrenirler. Daha akıcı hale geldikçe, doğal olarak daha zor kitaplar okumaya başlarlar, ancak okuma seviyelerinin üzerinde bir kitap vermek onları hayal kırıklığına uğratmaktan başka bir işe yaramaz. İyi bir okuyucu sayfadaki kelimeleri telaffuz etmekten öte ne okuduğunu da kavramak zorundadır.
Çocuklarınız için alacağınız kitapların bağımsız olarak, yani sizin yardımınız olmaksızın okumaları için uygun olup olmadıklarını basit bir yöntemle belirleyebilirsiniz. Yöntem şu: Çocuğunuzun bir sayfada bilmediği 5’ten fazla kelime çıkıyorsa kitap bağımsız okuma seviyelerinden daha yüksektir ve bu kitabın yardımcı olabilecek bir yetişkinle okunması daha iyi olacaktır. Bu kural olayı çok basite indirgemiş gibi görünebilir, ancak işe yaradığından emin olabilirsiniz. Yeni kitap alırken kitapların arka kapaklarındaki “grade-seviye” veya “age-yaş” referanslarını da baz alabilirsiniz.
Aşağıdaki listede 8 yaş ve üstü için çocukların ilgi alanlarına göre sınıflandırılmış ve puan verilmiş bir kitap listesini bulabilirsiniz. Özellikle 11-13 yaş grubunda İkinci Dünya Savaşı ve Soykırım gibi ağır ama öğretici ve akışkan kitaplar İngiltere’de çok popülerdir. Bu kitap listesini oluştururken elimizden geldiğince bir kültür çatışmasına sebep olabilecek karakterlerin olduğu kitapları dışarda tutmaya çalıştık. Ancak bütün kitapları baştan sona okuyarak uygunluk denetimi yapmış değiliz. Anne babalara tavsiyemiz, özellikle de yıldızlı olan kitapları çocuklarına okutmadan önce bir göz atmaları.

Uppers: 5-6. Sınıflar
